The course was laid out in the late 1880s by Sir Richard William Bulkeley the wealthy landowner of Baron Hill whose estate was founded in the 15th century, Membership of the Club was confined to landed proprietors successful businessmen and notable academics. as golf at that time was the exclusive indulgence of the well-to-do.

In 1895 when the 'Golfer's Guide' listed only nine established courses in the whole of Wales the club boasted 43 members including 20 ladies, The annual subscription was 10/6d and green fees were a shilling a day or three shillings a week. Caddies were available at a charge of 6d a round for the head caddie and 3d for others, Working class participation was virtually discouraged until the 1930s when an artisan membership was introduced,

After the Second World War. which helped to break down class barriers, the Club was reconstituted and membership thrown open to a wider public, The course was improved and in recent years a new clubhouse has been built. Visiting golfers are always welcome and will find the course an exciting challenge.
